Born 29 May 2006, also known as Gukesh D, is an Indian chess grandmaster. He is the third-youngest grandmaster in history the third-youngest to reach a chess rating of 2700, the youngest to reach a rating of 2750, the youngest Candidates Tournament winner and the youngest contender to compete for the World Championship. He has won one team and two individual gold medals at the Olympiad as well as one bronze team medal. He is a silver medalist at the Asian Games. Gukesh is one of India’s brightest chess talents. He earned the GM title at 12 years, 7 months and 17 days of age narrowly missing GM Sergey Karjakin’s record by 17 days. In September 2023, he was ranked eighth in the world and first in India—ending GM Viswanathan Anand’s 37-year reign as India’s top-rated player. Also contributing to his stamina is physical activity – Gukesh plays tennis regularly. He engages in at least three sets per day, every day of the week, when he’s in Chennai.

Additionally, Gukesh maintains a consistent routine of meditation and yoga, which could aid in maintaining composure. This definitely helps in recovering well from defeats.
His success mantra is dedication and continuous improvement.
In an interview with FIDE, Gukesh says, “I just try to enjoy the process and keep improving day by day.”

He adds, “… one thing that I always try to remember is to never be content with what I have achieved, and you know it’s a long, long time. Gukesh D is becoming one of the biggest inspirations of the next generation of chess like Vishwanathan Anand.
