PM Modi Degree Row | RTI Act’s Purpose Not to Satisfy Someone’s Curiosity: DU Tells Delhi High Court
The Delhi High Court is hearing a case regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s academic degree.

The issue stems from a 2016 order by the Central Information Commission (CIC), which directed Delhi University (DU) to disclose details of students who passed the BA program in 1978, the year PM Modi reportedly graduated.

DU challenged this order in 2017, and Justice Sachin Datta is currently presiding over the case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta represented DU argued that the Right to Information Act (RTI) is not meant to satisfy public curiosity but to ensure transparency and accountability. He emphasized that the requested details qualify as “third-party information” protected under Section 8(1)(e) of the RTI Act.

The RTI request, filed by activist Neeraj Kumar, sought names, roll numbers, marks, and results of all students from 1978. DU agreed to share general statistics but opposed releasing individual information, calling the CIC order legally flawed. Justice Datta will hear the matter later this month, as debates continue over balancing privacy rights with the public’s demand for transparency.
