Show Cause Notice Issued to Diljit Dosanjh Concert Organizer for Breaching Noise Limits
The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently disposed of a PIL that sought to address noise pollution concerns during Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh’s concert in Chandigarh.

The event, held on December 14, had drawn attention after the UT administration issued a show-cause notice to the organizers for breaching the 75-decibel noise limit set by the court.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sudhir Singh, had permitted the concert under the condition that noise levels must not exceed the limit, warning of penal action otherwise. Despite this, a report filed by the UT administration confirmed the breach of noise limits, leading to the issuance of a show-cause notice under the Environment Protection Act.

The PIL, filed by resident Ranjeet Singh, raised concerns about noise pollution, traffic management, and crowd control at the event, arguing that such lapses violated citizens’ fundamental rights under Article 14, 19, and 21 of the Constitution. The High Court expressed satisfaction that the Union Territory (UT) administration had taken necessary steps and stated that the matter would be resolved through due legal processes.

In a lighter moment during the hearing, the bench referenced an upcoming Coldplay concert in Ahmedabad, humorously suggesting the petitioner could challenge noise concerns there too. The Court noted that ticket sales for the event had broken records, selling out within seconds. With the administration addressing the violations and assuring further action, the court concluded the proceedings.
