State bans nylon and glass-coated cotton threads for kite flying: Gujarat HC
The Gujarat High Court has ruled that glass-coated cotton threads, commonly used for kite flying, are extremely dangerous to citizens, birds, and animals. Therefore, they are prohibited during the upcoming Uttarayan festival, which will be celebrated on January 14th and 15th.

Referring to the State’s resolution from December, the court noted that all types of threads coated with glass or harmful substances are banned, without making any distinction between synthetic and cotton threads. In a 2016 PIL, restrictions on kite flying were sought, specifically banning Chinese manjha, nylon strings, and glass-coated cotton threads.

During the hearing, the court rejected the vendors’ arguments and emphasized glass-coated threads are highly dangerous, even more so than Chinese threads. Despite not being explicitly mentioned in earlier NGT orders, the court upheld the State’s decision to ban them.

The Government Pleader informed the court that the State had taken steps to implement the ban, catching 34 manufacturing units producing banned items and planning continuous raids until the Uttarayan festival. A dedicated team has been formed to ensure that prohibited articles are not manufactured or sold. The Court has asked the State to file an affidavit detailing further actions and steps taken against the manufacturers.
