Supreme Court Refuses to Entertain PIL Against UP Court’s Remarks on ‘Love Jihad’
The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to expunge ‘Love-Jihad’ remarks made in an order by a Uttar Pradesh court.
The petition also sought guidelines to prevent judicial pronouncements from including personal or generalized observations.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti dismissed the plea, stating the petitioner had no locus as they were not a party to the original case. The Court also noted that the issue was being ‘sensationalized.’ The PIL had challenged an order by a UP court, which described ‘Love Jihad’ as an act where Muslim men allegedly target Hindu women for conversion to Islam through marriage under false pretenses.

In the same order, the Additional District and Sessions Judge, Bareilly, sentenced a Muslim man to life imprisonment for raping a Hindu woman. The judge remarked that ‘Love Jihad’ aims to establish dominance over India through demographic changes and international conspiracy. It further warned that if illegal conversions through ‘Love Jihad’ are not stopped, India could face severe consequences in the future.
