Press Trust of India (PTI) is one of the largest News Agency in India. It is headquartered in New Delhi and it is a nonprofit cooperative among more than 500 Indian newspapers.
Currently PTI commands 90 per cent of news agency market share in India. PTI was registered in 1947 and started functioning in 1949.
It employs more than 600 journalists and 800 stringers to cover almost every city and small town in India. PTI also has correspondents in major capitals and business centres around the world. It was incorporated in Madras in 1947 with The Hindu’s proprietor, Kasturi Srinivasan, as its Founding Chairman. It took over the operations of the Associated Press of India from Reuters in 1948-49. It provides news coverage and information of the region in both English and Hindi.

PTI exchanges information with several other news agencies including 100 news agencies based outside India, such as Associated Press, Agence France-Perese, The New York Times and Bloomberg L. P. Major Indian subscribers of PTI include The Hindu, Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, The Times of India, NDTV, The Statesman, News 18, The Tribune, the All India Radio, Doordarshan, and The Wire.
PTI has offices in Bangkok, Beijing, Colombo, Dubai, Islamabad, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, New York City, and Washington D. C.
Its current chairman is K N Shanth Kumar.

(1) 27 August 1947- PTI was founded
(2) 01 February 1949- PTI begins new services
(3) 1953- PTI becomes a free agent, independent of Reuters
(4) 1976- PTI Economic Service launched
(5) February, 1976- PTI, UNI, Samachar Bharti, and Hindustan Samachar merged to become ‘Samachar’
(6) July, 1980- PTI Feature Service launched
(7) October, 1981- PTI Science Service launched
(8) 1984- PTI service launched for subscribers in United States
(9) February, 1986- PTI- TV launched.

(10) April, 1986- PTI- Bhasha (Hindi News service) launched
(11) October, 1987- PTI photo service launched
(12) August, 1993- PTI Graphics Service launched
(13) March, 1999- PTI celebrates Golden Jubilee, PTI goes on Internet
