Krishna Janmabhoomi Dispute | SC Expresses Reluctance to Interfere with Consolidation of Suits
On Friday, January 10, the Supreme Court showed hesitation in interfering with the Allahabad High Court’s decision to consolidate all cases related to the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah dispute.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar noted that bringing all the cases together would benefit both sides. However, no formal order was passed, and the matter was adjourned until April 1, 2025. The case revolves around the Shahi Eidgah Mosque in Mathura, alleged to have been built during the Mughal era on a demolished temple at Lord Krishna’s birthplace.

A 1968 agreement allowed both the mosque and temple to coexist. However, this agreement is now being challenged in several lawsuits, claiming it was made fraudulently. The Allahabad High Court in May 2023 took over 15 such lawsuits, saying the matter affects public interest across communities. The Shahi Eidgah Mosque Committee has opposed this, arguing that the cases are not all the same and that the consolidation complicates things.

CJI Khanna dismissed concerns about consolidation, saying it wouldn’t make a difference. The Court also noted that challenges related to the Places of Worship Act and previous orders for mosque inspections are still pending. The next hearing is set for April 2025, leaving the matter unresolved for now.
