Sheikh Hasina’s Stay in India Is Her Personal Choice, Says Jaishankar

Sheikh Hasina’s Stay in India a Personal Choice, Says JaishankarNew Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar clarified that the ongoing stay of Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India is entirely her personal decision, emphasizing that New Delhi has not influenced her choice nor imposed any restrictions.

The statement comes amid renewed demands from Bangladesh for Hasina’s extradition after a court in Dhaka recently upheld her death sentence in cases linked to crimes against humanity.

India, however, has maintained a cautious and diplomatic stance, neither confirming nor denying any move regarding her return.

Jaishankar explained that Hasina arrived in India under extraordinary circumstances after political unrest escalated in Bangladesh last year.

“She came to India in a difficult time, and what she chooses next is for her alone to decide,” he noted, stressing that India respects individual freedom and humanitarian concerns.

He further highlighted India’s long-standing goodwill toward Bangladesh.

“As a democratic nation, we value the will of the people of Bangladesh.

Whatever direction the country takes, we hope it leads to stability, maturity, and a balanced political environment,” he said.

The minister’s remarks also came during a discussion on India’s foreign relations, where he reiterated New Delhi’s independent diplomatic approach, balancing ties with major global powers while safeguarding national interests.

Meanwhile, regional observers believe that Hasina’s presence in India could continue to influence Bangladesh’s internal political dynamics, especially as the nation navigates a sensitive period marked by legal battles, leadership changes, and international attention.

For now, India has made it clear that Sheikh Hasina’s stay is neither a political shelter nor a strategic move—it is her personal choice during a moment of crisis.—
